8th Annual Financial Empowerment Conference

March 8 – 9, 2019

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.  Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share

plunder with the proud.  Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

As the body of Turner Chapel AME Church seeks to Awaken the F.I.R.E. to live out the vision and mission

of the church to reach everyone and share the message of Jesus Christ, we also encourage everyone to

fulfill their stewardship potential by gaining the knowledge that will increase their financial security. It is often

Pride that keeps people from taking advantage of financial education opportunities because of the concern

that it indicates that we are not where we want to be financially.  The truth is that no matter where we stand

financially, we can always learn more and improve our financial situation.  This year's conference series is

aimed at promoting practical knowledge that everyone can use to enhance their financial prosperity.

The two-day conference is simply the kickoff for a year packed with financial education opportunities that will

help take your finances to another level.  So, embark on this journey with us and begin to Ignite a new direction

in your life.

Opening Session - Do It Afraid

Whether you are experiencing financial challenges or have built the wealth of Bill Gates, as long as there is

breath in your body, you have room to grow.  We can experience that growth when we have a clear- eyed

view of where we are, a willingness to face our fears, and a commitment to learn and apply the knowledge

we've gained.  Our keynote speaker, Dr. Valerie Martin-Stewart will share insights from her years of experience

impacting the lives of people and the lessons she has written about in her many books, showing us how to push

past the barriers that would keep us from unleashing our full potential and moving forward to reach new heights

Breakout Sessions

Fuel Your Financial Security by Budgeting & Saving

How you manage your day-to-day finances in terms of the spending and saving decisions you make sets

the stage for almost every aspect of your financial life.  That includes making the most of the income you

make by determining what you will spend on your needs vs. your wants, how much you will set aside to

save for your short- and long-term needs, and what you will allocate towards paying off any debts you

may have.  This session will help you evaluate what an appropriate breakdown of those priorities is for

you and help you create a plan to build your first line of defense against the unexpected with a level of

Cash Reserves that will provide you with greater financial security.

Facilitated by Christie Gooch, Principle Strategist, Strategic Collaborations

Simple Strategies to Melt the Chains of Debt

Whether it is debt from student loans, taxes, or credit cards, the constant financial weight of those debt

payments and the emotional stress it causes can leave you feeling in bondage.  In order to tackle the

burden of debt, you need to take an honest inventory of your situation and make a commitment to

doing what is necessary to release yourself from the debt that slows you down from focusing on

other financial priorities.  In this session, you will learn strategies to design and implement a plan to

eliminate your debt and stay out of debt in the future.  By eliminating the debt that holds you back,

you can light the spark to Ignite your financial prosperity.

Facilitated by Lillie Certion, Regional Leader, Primerica Financial Services

How to Keep from Getting Burned Because of Your Credit Score

Whether you need to borrow money or not, your credit score factors into so many of the decisions

that are made about you on a daily basis from employment to housing and even relationships.

As a result, taking care of your credit is an important part of being financially healthy.  This session

will show you what actions and contribute to driving your credit score and will give you practical

information to help you make the most of your credit standing whether you are working to rebuild

it or maintain it.

Facilitated by Bill Cheeks, President, ABBA Associates

Creating Your Game Plan to Light the Way to Retirement Independence

Having a life of prosperity and the peace of mind that comes from financial independence in

your later years is a primary goal of most people.  A fulfilling retirement comes from knowing you

have the income needed to take care of your necessary expenses and the funds to enjoy the

leisure time you've earned after a life of work.  In today's world with employer pensions available

to fewer people and concerns about the stability of Social Security, it is more important than

ever to have a complete plan for generating retirement income from those lifetime income

sources as well as personal savings in order to be financially secure.  This session will

provide a framework for establishing that financial security whether you are building toward

retirement or already there and seeking to make your money last throughout.

Facilitated by Kevin Turner, Financial Advisor, Peak Level Advisors

Protect Your Legacy to Take the Heat Off Your Loved Ones

Much of what we do financially is for us, but the truth is that it not only impacts us individually

but influences the people closest to us.  An important part of your financial stewardship is

preparing for both the expected and the unexpected.  You need to make provisions to

have your Financial House in Order in the event of an unfortunate and unexpected

circumstance or the certain circumstance that one day you will pass away.  Taking the

steps to formalize your financial legacy is one of the most generous things you can do for the

people you love.  This session will show you how to use Insurance and Estate Planning to

leave a positive financial legacy.

Facilitated by Stephanie Anderson, Attorney, The Anderson Law Practice & Bobby Van Buren,

Owner, Bobby Van Buren Insurance Agency

Closing Session - Assembling the Tools to Ignite Your Prosperity

Managing your money effectively to take care of your present-day responsibilities and

build for your future dreams and goals involves taking a big picture view of the different

aspects of your financial life.  In the closing panel discussion, we will have experts representing

the areas of Estate Planning, Insurance, Tax Planning, Real Estate, and Financial/Retirement

Planning to answer your questions and help you pull together the pieces of knowledge you

gained during the conference, so you can take what you've learned and apply it to move your

finances to the next level.
